UK retailer Debenhams opens outlet in Pakistan

RBR Staff Writer Published 16 July 2012

UK-based department store chain Debenhams has opened its first department store in Pakistan at Dolmen Mall in Karachi, as part of a major expansion of its brand worldwide.

The retailer has signed a franchise agreement with a local company, Team A Ventures, which already represents other British retailers in Pakistan, reported TheNational.

Debenhams International senior business manager Lucy Haine told the website that there's a highly affluent middle class, which is growing in Pakistan, and the firm has also got a strong franchise partner.

Haine added that the company is looking forward to expanding into other cities such as Islamabad and Lahore, if the opportunity to lease store sites arises.

The retail chain is also opening its first store in Russia in September this year. Debenhams recently said it will launch an online delivery website in Germany.

"International is a growing part of our business. We are always looking for new sites," Haine said.

Debenhams operates about 153 stores in the UK and Ireland and 69 stores in 25 other countries.
