Toshiba to launch humanoid robot at Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo

RBR Staff Writer Published 17 April 2015

Toshiba is planning to launch its humanoid robot at the Mitsukoshi department store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo next week.

The Aiko Chihira is a female-looking robot, which has been developed to appear, talk and move as humanly as possible, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Chihira, which can speak only Japanese, will offer six-minute guidance to customers with information about the department store, including events.

Programmed with multiple human-like expressions, Chihira blinks, bows and moves its mouth and lips while speaking.

However, Chihira cannot respond to questions asked, unlike humanoid robots that have been working at Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ.

aLab, Osaka University, Shibaura Institute of Technology and Shonan Institute of Technology have jointly developed Aiko Chihira, as reported in The Japan Times.
