Kroger to open ten stores in Virginia over the next five years

Supermarkets and department stores chain Kroger plans to open ten new stores in Hampton Roads market, Virginia, over next five years.

As a part of the company's expansion strategy, the retailer will open a 'marketplace' store model in Virginia Beach in June, reported Savvyshoppertoday.

The new marketplace store will occupy124, 000ft² space and will include traditional grocery offerings, besides 30,000ft² of nongrocery, home-store offerings, including furniture, home décor and toys.

The first Mid-Atlantic marketplace is scheduled to open in Richmond in two months.

Kroger's Mid-Atlantic region president Jay Cummins told the website that the company will build two new stores a year.

Kroger, currently operates 2,425 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states of US under two dozen local banners including Kroger, City Market, Dillons, Jay C, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry's, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs and Smith's.

The company also operates 788 convenience stores, 342 fine jewelry stores, 1,124 supermarket fuel centers and 37 food processing plants in the US.
