Kohl’s to open small format stores, e-commerce fulfillment center in US

US-based specialty department store chain Kohl’s is planning to open four small format stores and its fifth e-commerce fulfillment center in US.

The move forms part of the company's strategic plans to invest in its store base and optimize the capabilities of its e-commerce fulfillment network across the US.

The 35,000 ft2 small format stores will be opened in October this year. The stores will be located in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, Blue Ash, Ohio, East Windsor, New Jersey, and Montebello, California.

With the investment in small format stores, Kohl’s is planning to improve omnichannels capabilities and leaning into its store base of over 1,100 stores located across 49 states in the country.

The 937,000 ft2 e-commerce fulfillment center, located in Plainfield in Indiana, will be equipped with latest technology to enhance productivity and throughput.

The retailer will start shipping from its fifth e-commerce fulfillment center in this month and the facility willprocess, fill and ship orders from Kohls.com

Along with the Plainfield facility, Kohl’s operates e-commerce fulfillment centers in San Bernardino, Edgewood, Monroe and DeSoto.

As a part of the strategic plan to improve store profitability, nearly 300 Kohl’s stores have been modified with new interior layouts

Almost half of Kohl’s stores will be operationally smaller by the end of 2017. The fashion retailer said that by rightsizing stores depending upon the customer and inventory needs, they will be able to operate more efficiently and enhance services to customers.
