Fashion retailer Nordstrom plans Canada expansion in 2014

RBR Staff Writer Published 06 June 2013

American fashion retailer Nordstrom is planning to extend its retail network into the Canadian market with the launch of 10 upscale Nordstrom outlets and about 20 Rack concept stores in 2014.

Initial stores under the proposal are planned in Calgary, Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto with first Calgary store to open in the Chinook shopping centre by 2014-fall.

The retailer is mulling to finance the expansion through its five-year $3.7bn capital plan.

Nordstrom, meanwhile, is set to launch an ad campaign in 2013-fall before openings its store in the country.

At the Retail Council of Canada's Store 2013 conference, Nordstrom Canada president Karen McKibbin stated that prices of some of the products would cost more compared to US, added McKibbins citing factors such as steeper duties and taxes.

The retailer, however, claimed that it is working to minimize the costs, besides assuring that it would not sell items at higher prices than the rival chains.

Further, Nordstrom is expected to hire local staff for its stores' management positions.
