The company will invest around $20m to rebrand the 177-year-old Wellington store.

Expected to open in mid-2016, the rebranded store is the first of several stores planned by David Jones in New Zealand.

David Jones CEO Iain Nairn said: "This is an exciting new venture for David Jones, giving us a significant initial presence in New Zealand's growing market with a prime location in the thriving capital, Wellington."

Majority of the Kirkcaldie & Stains' employees at the store will be retailned by David Jones.

"We will preserve the heritage-listed frontage whilst completely renovating the interior. Our aim is to create a world class shopping environment with the quality finishings and latest retail technology that shoppers expect from a premium department store," added Nairn.

The rebranded store will sell David Jones fashion and apparel range.

David Jones operates department stores primarily in Australia. It is also involved in on-line retailing activities.
