Arcadia Group to expand overseas, open 28 Topshop stores in US

RBR Staff Writer Published 23 September 2013

British retail giant Arcadia Group is accelerating global expansion with 150 franchise store openings across the world over 2014, including 28 Topshop stores in 28 days in the US.

This latest development is part of the retailer's strategy to expand its overseas presence and to expand Topshop and Topman's partnership with department stores operator Nordstrom from the current 14 stores to 42.

The newly proposed 28 stores are slated to open in major US cities such as San Diego, Houston and Washington DC this month.

Arcadia owner Sir Philip Green said the group will open more than 150 franchise stores outside the UK across the company's brands, which include Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge and Burton as well as Topshop and Topman.

Overseas stores are slated to open in Australia, Vietnam, and Canada, with Topshop set to open its first standalone store in New Zealand in 2014.

The expansion of Topshop comes as Philip divested 25% stake in the brand in December 2012 to US private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners, a deal that valued Topshop at £2bn.

Further, Topshop is in talks to open five more wholly-owned stores in the US. Presently, it has flagship stores in New York, Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

In addition, Philip noted that the company is planning to open Topshop's stores in China, after opening a store in Hong Kong in June.
